Scoliosis Surgery Changes Lives of Ecuadorian Teens and Spine Specialists

June 5, 2015
Scoliosis is a deformation of the spine, which causes the normally straight spine to curve.Scoliosis affects approximately two percent of people. Dr. James West and Dr. Clint Howard recently performed spine surgery on two 14-year-olds from Ecuador diagnosed with scoliosis.

The teenagers, Victoria de Jesus Vera and Juleisy Delgado, initially came in with severe scoliosis to a surgical center operated by Bayside Medical Missions in Portoviejo, Ecuador. However, the procedures needed to correct the curvature of their spines were too complicated to be done at the clinic.

Dr. West and Dr. Howard donated their time and services that changed the girls’ lives. The surgeries were performed at Providence Hospital.
