"Over the fall and winter of 2010 and spring of 2011, I had many projects, both work and home. One of them was to replace the laminate flooring in my wife's beauty salon. After wrestling with fixtures, I noticed lower back pain that would not subside. I decided to finish the project before seeing a doctor thinking the soreness would heal itself. Didn’t happen! In my initial appointment with The Orthopaedic Group, Dr. McGinley gave me a good evaluation and suggested rest and some restricted days to let it heal. A week and lots of pain later, I was seeing him again at which time he suggested an epidural to try and ease the pain. Before giving this shot, he prayed my wife and me about the procedure and this gave me a feeling that I would get healed in one form or fashion. This meant a lot to me and I will never forget that day. The first shot lasted almost as far as my trip home, so we scheduled another for a week later. The anesthesiologist was as good to me like Dr. McGinley was. He even offered to schedule the surgery for me instead of a second shot. I went forward with the second shot anyway to be sure and it didn’t work either.

After looking through the list of doctors and qualifications, I decided Dr. Todd Volkman would be best for me and it was a great decision. He came in to see me and offered his solution, which was a lower lumbar microdiscectomy to repair a ruptured and broken disc in my back. Had the procedure done outpatient and was back to work on a part time basis in five days. It took me some time getting back to full duty and now I have no problems at all. I have been exercising and riding my mountain bike and that seems to help the most. I would like to say thanks to the doctors and staff of The Orthopaedic Group. I can’t believe how well I am now. I have since recommended The Orthopaedic Group to several of my friends and colleagues." -- Chris F.

"I am about to undergo my fourth neck surgery (third performed by Dr. Volkman). You are correct in your comments regarding how health issues affect our lives. I used to be a very active, healthy, vibrant person; I enjoyed doing many things for fun such as skiing, hiking, boating, jet ski riding, motorcycle riding, and horseback riding. I also enjoyed a great career as an RN at the Mobile Infirmary! I worked for 28 years at that hospital and of course when my problems with my neck got worse and the surgeries became more numerous, I had to stop working and go on disability, which is something I thought would never happen to me.

I am used to control my pain, but now it controls me! I do not like this fact but it is the truth. What I do, where I go, or whether or not I leave the house all revolves around my pain levels. I stay pretty depressed because even simple everyday activities of daily living cause my pain level to go up, I try to take daily walks -there again, walking will increase my pain levels. I feel as though I’ve already given up so much so most days I feel as though life is over for me, but then my inner strength kicks in and won't let me give up. I can only pray and thank God every day for giving me another chance and I also thank God everyday for having the most supportive husband anyone could ever ask for. I am very thankful to have the doctors and staff at The Orthopedic Group, P.C., because I do believe that all of you genuinely care about all of your patients. It feels great to walk into a place where everyone knows you and you know they care. Thanks for being there for me." -- Robin M.

"I had back surgery about two years ago performed by Dr Volkman. He is the greatest!   He is friendly, has great bedside manner, and no doubt he knows what he talking about, very knowledgeable! We need more doctors like him. No issues with my back anymore!" -- Rhonda L.

"I recently had surgery with Dr. Volkman as my surgeon, and as usual, everything went well. I do not worry at all with him operating on me because he makes me feel very confident. I really appreciate everything he has done for me. Dr. Volkman is the best." -- Robin M.

"Dr. Haas has been my favorite orthopaedic doctor for 10 years. When I went to him for a severe backache, he recommended a MRI to determine the extent of my injury. The results showed I needed back surgery that was very serious. Dr Haas recommended Dr Volkman who he considered the best doctor to perform this type of surgery. The surgery lasted six hours and numerous screws and pins were placed in my spine. The results were fantastic. I am now without any pain and I am back to playing golf three times a week and walking long distances! To this day I call it a miracle operation. Dr. Volkman and Dr. Haas are two of the finest doctors at The Orthopaedic Group, P.C." -- Anthony P.
