After suffering what could have been a career-ending knee injury, local softball star, Burgandie Rabe, regained movement and returned to the softball diamond following an anatomic ACL procedure. Otherwise known as an ACL or Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction, this innovative procedure reestablishes the ligament in a more anatomical way than other treatment options.
Seventeen-year-old student athlete, Rabe, played basketball and softball at Davidson High School prior to her injury. It was during a basketball game that Rabe’s injury occurred following a collision with another player, resulting in an ACL tear.
Dr. Jeffrey M. Conrad, knee and sports medicine specialist at The Orthopaedic Group, P.C., conducted an anatomic ACL reconstruction to restore function in Rabe’s knee, allowing her to fully return to competitive play.
“With the anatomic ACL procedure, the new ACL is placed in a more anatomic position than with other ACL reconstruction techniques. This allows the knee to function more like it did prior to injury,” explains Dr. Conrad. “In addition, patients typically go home the same day of surgery and start therapy exercises the same week. The goal is to get the patient back to sports or work as soon as possible.”
