New Year, New You

new year resolutionsThe new year typically brings resolutions to lose weight, exercise more and get healthy. Gyms and fitness studios are overflowing with well-intentioned new members right now. Within a few weeks, those crowds will dwindle and resolutions will be forgotten—at least until next January.

We want our patients to keep bone and joint health as a priority throughout the year.  The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has identified osteoporosis and bone fragility as a major health problem in this country and a leading cause of fractures, particularly for people over the age of 50.

Weight-bearing exercises and activities aimed at improving your balance can reduce your risk. Among the most popular fitness trends, yoga is an excellent activity for increasing strength and improving balance and flexibility.

Gyms and fitness studios throughout the area offer a variety of programs designed to meet all of these objectives. Most are offering discount rates on memberships this month. You can also develop your own exercise program at home. Walking, jogging, cycling, stretching, dancing, weight training, and even activities such as skipping and jump rope that you enjoyed as a child help to strengthen bones.

However, before starting an exercise program, particularly if you have issues with osteoporosis or fragility, talk with your doctor about what is appropriate for you. For more information on exercise and bone health, check the website for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
