Coding Team Spotlight
At The Orthopaedic Group, exceptional patient care depends on many people working behind the scenes. Our six-member Coding Team plays an important role in that care, working closely with our physicians, clinical teams, precertification staff, and other departments every day.
This Department Spotlight is especially meaningful to us.
Among the team members pictured is Sandy Moore, who recently passed away after more than 30 years with The Orthopaedic Group. Over those three decades, Sandy witnessed tremendous growth and change at TOG and became a familiar friend and coworker to generations of physicians and staff. We are grateful to have the opportunity to recognize the team she was such a longtime part of while also celebrating her life and legacy at TOG.
Behind the Codes: What Our Coding Team Does
Medical coding is an essential part of orthopaedic care that most patients never see. Our Coding Team reviews physician documentation and assigns the appropriate medical codes for office visits, procedures, injections, surgeries, and other orthopaedic services.
But their work isn’t limited to what happens after a patient receives care.
Every surgery performed by our physicians is coded by this team before it moves through the precertification process. Our coders review the planned procedure and physician documentation and work directly with clinical teams when additional information or clarification is needed. Once coding is complete, the information moves to our Precertification Team for the insurance authorization process.
After care is provided, the Coding Team continues reviewing documentation and coding services accurately to support insurance claims, reimbursement, regulatory compliance, and complete medical records.
It is detailed work that requires an extensive knowledge of medical terminology, orthopaedic procedures, insurance requirements, and constantly changing coding guidelines. It also requires collaboration. Our coders communicate daily with physicians, clinical staff, precertification, and other departments to help keep the process moving for our patients.
Celebrating Our Team and Remembering Sandy
Most patients will never meet the six people pictured here, but their work touches patient care throughout The Orthopaedic Group every day. We are grateful for the knowledge, accuracy, and dedication each member of our Coding Team brings to TOG.
This particular team photo will always mean a little more to us.
It captures Sandy as we will remember her — part of her team and part of the TOG family she called home for more than 30 years.
We are thankful for the years, friendships, laughter, and memories Sandy shared with us. She will be deeply missed and always remembered as part of The Orthopaedic Group.
