Scoliosis Surgery Changes Lives of Ecuadorian Teens and Spine Specialists

June 2015 – Dr. James West and Dr. Clint Howard recently performed spine surgery on two 14-year-olds from Ecuador that changed the girls’ lives.

The teenagers, Victoria de Jesus Vera and Juleisy Delgado, initially came in with severe scoliosis to a surgical center operated by Bayside Medical Missions in Portoviejo, Ecuador. However, the procedures needed to correct the curvatures of their spines were too complicated to be done at the clinic.

Drs. West and Howard donated their time and services, as did Providence Hospital, where the surgeries were performed.

Backpacks and Back Pain

August 2014 – As we send our children out the door for school, make sure their backpacks are the right fit. Otherwise, they may suffer back pain at an early age.

Dr. James L. West, spine specialist, recommends that students not carry more than 10 to 20 percent of their body weight on their backs daily. The best option is a rolling backpack, but that’s not always a trendy option for teenagers.
