Native Mobilian Stephen B. Cope, M.D. knew early on that he had an interest in the medical field.
His father was a neurosurgeon, which gave him the opportunity to work in the operating room some summers throughout high school and college. His passion for sports is what led him away from neurosurgeon and into orthopaedics.
“I fell in love with orthopaedic surgery during those summers in the operating room,” Dr. Cope says. “I also have a passion for sports and it was a natural fit to find a specialty that combined surgery and the care of injured athletes.”
His combined passion for orthopaedics and patient care has made him the physician so many in our area know and trust with their care.
Dr. Cope completed his fellowship training at American Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama and now specializes in sports-related injuries and arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder. He shares that the biggest change he’s seen in the field of orthopaedics is the degree of specialization.
“I think fellowship training is extremely beneficial to patients who need our care,” he shares. “I believe medicine in general will one day rely less on procedures and we will see more cellular/biologic treatments. I hope one day we can cure arthritis without surgery.”
His mentors and influences include his father and Drs. Clancy and Andrews, who reinforced in him the fact that the patient deserves your very best as their physician. This continues to inspire him in his approach today, stating, “I believe my purpose in life was to do the work I enjoy so much and seeing injured people get back to their lives and sports.”
Even with all he has done in his professional career, Dr. Cope says his greatest accomplishments are outside of the clinic and operating room. He’s been married to his wife for 39 years and he says, “My biggest accomplishment is marrying my unbelievable wife and raising four wonderful boys who are all married. We are so proud of the men they have become and watching them become parents to our seven grandchildren.”
When asked to describe himself in just three words, Dr. Cope provides these: compassionate, happy, and focused. In both his personal and professional life, these words represent Dr. Cope well and we couldn’t agree more!
