Physical Therapists – The Architects to Recovery

Physical therapists play an essential role in the recovery journey of athletes.

As we continue our series on the team behind the team, this week we discuss the role of physical therapists. While the orthopaedic surgeon helps the athlete get started on the road to recovery, it is the physical therapist who gets them to the finish line. Whether one is recovering from a simple sprain or strain or from a complex reconstructive surgery, it is the physical therapist who designs the game plan to get them back on the field.

Training and Education

Today, physical therapists are required to complete three years of postgraduate work to earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy. They complete training in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, exercise science, and clinical reasoning, along with hands-on clinical experience. They can go on to complete further training in other specialized areas including sports rehabilitation.

Every athlete and injury is unique. It is up to the physical therapist to personalize the treatment plan and address the specific needs of the athlete. The rehabilitation process of a swimmer’s shoulder injury will vary dramatically from that of a football player’s ACL tear. Treatment plans can include strengthening, flexibility, balance and coordination, along with manual therapy.

In addition to creating a rehabilitation program, physical therapists work to help alleviate pain and inflammation. After an injury or surgery, the road to recovery cannot begin until the pain and inflammation have improved. This recovery process can be accelerated with the aid of the therapist. Modalities can include heat and ice therapy, ultrasound and electrical stimulation, along with manual techniques including massage and joint mobilization.

As the athlete continues to recover, physical therapists can begin to improve the athlete’s strength and mobility. By gradually increasing the intensity, the therapist helps minimize any setbacks that can occur. Injuries can have not only a physical impact on the athlete, but also a psychological one. Through the encouragement of the physical therapist, the athlete can remain motivated throughout the rehabilitation process.

Once the athlete has recovered from their injury, the physical therapist can turn their attention to prevention. Through education on proper body mechanics, warm-up routines, rest, and recovery, athletes can help prevent future problems. Many times I tell my patients just because you are done with therapy does not mean you are done with therapy. This is where education and home exercise programs come into play.

During & Beyond Recovery – Communicating Throughout the Progress

As with any team, communication is key. Physical therapists spend more time with the athlete during the recovery process than any other provider. They will have the most comprehensive knowledge about the athlete’s progress. Relaying this information to the other team members, including the orthopaedic surgeon, ensures optimal progression for the athlete.

Through a foundational knowledge of anatomy, biology, kinesiology, and psychology, the physical therapist can construct the pathway for the athlete’s recovery. Their specialized training ensures a safe recovery back to the game. By working with a physical therapist, the athlete can be stronger and more resilient than before. This can help provide long-term improvement in health and function.
