Shoulder

As the most versatile joint in the human body, our shoulder joint provides us with a tremendous amount of flexibility. However, this range of motion can lead to shoulder pain or discomfort. In most cases, pain in the shoulder can result from one of four main causes: inflammation, instability, arthritis, or a fracture.

Symptoms of a possible shoulder condition or injury include:

  • Pain and stiffness in or around the shoulder joint

  • Difficulty and/or inability to reach overhead
  • Shoulder joint pain that keeps you awake at night
  • A popping or grinding feeling when using the afflicted shoulder

Tips for Healthy Joints

As the connections between your bones, your shoulder joints will sustain a certain amount of wear and tear as we age. Remaining pain- and arthritis-free requires practicing good shoulder joint preservation techniques. The following techniques will help you to treat your shoulder joints with care as they age.

Movement

Every day, move your shoulder joints through its full range of motion to sustain mobility and freedom from pain. Make sure your movements are slow and gentle to avoid injury and be careful not to overextend.

Use

Be sure to extend and flex your shoulder joints in the manner for which they are intended. Avoid overextending or stressful positions as well as techniques that could put you at risk for injury.

Posture

The manner in which you carry your body has a significant impact on whether your shoulder joints will remain pain-free. Practice good posture by adjusting workspaces to your specifications. When carrying heavy objects, be sure to cradle the items close to your body.

Stay Active

Avoid keeping your shoulder joints in the same position for a prolonged period of time. This will help to keep your shoulder joints from becoming stiff.
