The Orthopaedic Group, P.C. welcomes Dr. Frerichs and Dr. Spain to our Foley location.
Dr. Frerichs graduated from the University of South Alabama with a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences and received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. Dr. Frerichs completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the University of South Alabama, Orthopaedic Surgery Department and went on to complete double fellowship training in Foot and Ankle at Desert Orthopaedic Center under Dr. Troy Watson and Sports Medicine at the Andrews Institute under Dr. James Andrews.
Dr. Frerichs specializes in treating conditions of the foot and ankle, shoulder, knee and other sports-related injuries. He also specializes in arthroscopy of the foot ankle knee and shoulder.
Dr. Frerichs was born in Pensacola but now calls Orange Beach home. He became interested in orthopaedics after having spine surgery at age 19. Dr. Frerichs and his wife, Cori, are raising three children Kiele, Mya and Chase. He enjoys weightlifting, SEC football, fishing and spending quality time with his wife and children. His family is involved in church and various sporting activities.
Dr. Spain, a primary care sports medicine specialist, is board certified in Family Medicine and fellowship trained in sports medicine. Dr. Spain specializes in the non-surgical treatment of orthopaedic injuries and conditions and medical conditions in athletes of all ages and abilities. He has a particular interest in diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound, minimally invasive procedures, and regenerative medicine.
A native of Mobile, Alabama, Dr. Spain is a graduate of Tulane University and attended the University of South Alabama Medical School. Dr. Spain completed his family medicine residency at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. Following residency, he practiced emergency medicine before completing a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of South Florida-Morton Plant Mease. In training and practice, he has served as team physician for several high schools, colleges, and professional sports teams. He is well versed in the management of common health issues and injury as they relate to the sports enthusiast.
Dr. Spain has additional specialty training in minimally invasive and ultrasound guided procedures, orthobiological regenerative medicine (stem cell treatment, bone marrow techniques, platelet rich plasma), and the innovative Tenex Health procedure for chronic tendinopathy. He also cares for sports concussion, nonsurgical fractures, arthritis, tendinitis, and other medical and musculoskeletal ailments.
Dr. Spain is an avid competitive age-group triathlete and has completed multiple full Ironman Triathlons. He has a natural interest in the medical coverage of mass endurance events and the care of endurance athletes and runners. Dr. Spain enjoys spending time outdoors running, biking, swimming, boating, fishing and SCUBA diving. Dr. Spain’s wife, Molly, is also an active triathlete and sports fan. They have two sons, Miles and Jack, and a chocolate lab, Pace.
