As we honor the legacy and impact of J. Michael Cockrell, M.D., we reflect on his career and contributions to the sports community and his nearly 32-year tenure as a provider at The Orthopaedic Group, P.C.
Dr. Cockrell, a sports medicine specialist, graduated from the University of South Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Cockrell completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of South Alabama Medical Center followed by completing his fellowship training in sports medicine with Dr. John Garrett at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
In August of 1992, Dr. Cockrell joined The Orthopaedic Group, P.C., where he practiced for 32 years as a board-certified surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder disorders. Dr. Cockrell served as the Medical Director for the Mobile Azalea Trail Run for over 25 years, the Medical Team for Reese’s Senior Bowl, and a clinical associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of South Alabama. Additionally, Dr. Cockrell provided medical coverage for St. Luke’s Episcopal School and other sporting events throughout the Mobile & Baldwin County Communities.
Visitation will be open to the public Wednesday, May 22, 5 – 7 p.m. and Thursday, May 23, 11 a.m. – Noon with a graveside funeral service to follow at Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Tillman’s Corner.
